The Sanskrit word Kapal means ‘Cranium’ or ‘Forehead” and Bhati means ‘Light’ or ‘Perception’ or ‘Knowledge‘. Hence Kapalbhati is a practice which brings a state of light and clarity to our brain. Another name of this practice is Kapalshodhana where ‘Kapal’ has the same meaning and ‘Shodhana’ means ‘To purify’.

Our mind is a powerful tool and it absorbs all the good and bad energy from surroundings that means your mind holds all the source of thoughts in it. Doesn’t matter if you think about it or not. The mind is always at work even when you are sleeping. Works for you nonstop in this whole a lot journey.
Kapalbhati pranayama is used in yogic practice to cleanse the frontal brain with the breath. It purifies your thoughts and gives clarity to the purpose of life.
Kapalbhati actively reduces the volume of air in your lungs below this level through the forced exhalation. In this practice, Inhalation remains as a passive process, which brings s the level of air in the lungs back to the basic volume only. Kapalbhati reverses the normal breathing process.
How to practice Kapalbhati Pranayama?
Practice with the Shatkarma method
- Sit in a comfortable meditation asana. Ex: Vajrasana or Padmasana.
- The head and spine should be straight with the hands resting lightly on the knees. You can add a yoga mudra while your hands are on your knees. Chin mudra is recommended.
- Shoulder and face remain relaxed.
- Close your eyes and relax the whole body.
- Inhale slowly with both nostrils.
- Exhale through both the nostrils with a forceful contraction of abdominal muscles.
- Following inhalation should take place passively (slowly/easily) to relax the abdominal muscles.
- After completing 10 rapid breaths in succession, Inhale and Exhale deeply with both the nostrils and allow the breath to return to normal.
- This is round one. Practice for 5 round daily.
Precautions:
- Kapalabhati pranayama can be practiced by your own awareness but If any problem occurs, Consult a Guide or a Yoga teacher.
- Kapalbhati should be performed empty stomach and 3-4 hours after the meal.
- Should be practiced in the morning as it can prevent sleep.
- If pain and dizziness are experienced sit quietly and relax for some time and then continue with awareness and less force.
- Practice in the open and green area is recommended.

(Contra-Indications: Should not be practiced by those suffering from Heart Disease, High blood pressure, Vertigo, Hernia, and Gastric ulcers. Avoid practicing in periods and -pregnancy.)

I am so sorry to hear you will be battling this ugly disease and my heart goes out to you.
I really do want to start yoga but I’m struggling with basic things right now such as kneeling, sitting down on the floor and using my hands to push back up, but I hope to have a little of a remission and get better once the weather changes so I can start.
