Shashankasana- A Way to Surrender

The Sanskrit word Shashank means ‘Moon’. It is derived from two words: Shash meaning ‘Hare‘ and ‘Ank‘ meaning ‘Lap‘. People in India have seen the dark patches on the full moon as resembling the shape of a hare with the moon in its lap. Furthermore, The Moon symbolizes peace and calm; It emits soothing and tranquilizing vibrations. Shashankasana has similar cooling and calming effect. More Simply, it is the position frequently adopted by Hare and Rabbits.

Shashankasana is a blissful asana. After a deep and mindful practice, it felt so good to surrender your Mind, Body, and Spirit into this beautiful calming pose.

Our body holds stress in the various parts and Our backbone is the origin of this whole lot of existence. It holds the maximum stress and by surrendering your body into this asana your body opens ups the possibility of movements. It makes you feel grounded and calm, By touching our mother earth with the forehead(Brow Chakra) in due respect you feel ultimate pleasure.

How to do Shashank Asana?

  • Sit in Vajrasana, Placing the palms on the thighs and just above the knees.
  • Close your eyes and relax, Keeping the head and spine straight.
  • While inhaling, Raise the arms above the head, Keeping them straight and shoulder width apart.
  • Exhale while bending the trunk forward from the hips, keeping the arms and head straight and in line with the trunk.

  • At the end of the movement, the hands and forehead should rest on the floor in front of the knees.
  • Take ten mindful deep breaths.

Spiritually

On Manipura or Swadhisthana Chakra in the Final Position.

Benefits:

  • This Asana stretches and strengthens the back muscles and separate the individual vertebrae from each other, Releasing pressure on the disc.
  • Often nerve connections emanating from the spinal cord and squeezed by these discs, Giving rise to a various form of a backache.
  • This posture helps to relieve this problem in some cases and encourage the disc to resume their correct position.
  • It also regulates the functioning of the adrenal glands.
  • Regular practice relieves constipation.

 

{Contra-indications: This asana should not be performed by people with very high blood pressure, slipped disc and Vertigo.}
